Synergy Specialists began as a happy accident. I was helping my childhood friend, Dr. Shervin Molayem, a recent perio grad, find extra work by introducing him to GP practices I knew from my days selling dental supplies. I knew he could make extra money by rotating among several offices to fill his schedule. The idea of a traveling specialty might have rattled a more conservative specialist, but Shervin was open-minded and realistic about his options. At the time, the dental industry was still recovering from the financial crisis, and Shervin needed to provide for his family. So why not try something a little out-of-the-box?
By working together, we quickly realized that bringing a specialty to the GP practice was an innovative and lucrative move that could transform the dental industry. And we were right. GP practices were revitalized by the added production. Patients in underserved communities received access to high-quality care. As for Dr. Shervin, traveling specialty, which had once been considered a temporary solution, now became his preferred career path – one that benefited a large patient population.
Our network of specialists grew organically as more specialists embraced the idea and signed on. They certainly weren’t disappointed as they made considerably more money and experienced less stress than their struggling colleagues. The practices they served were also delighted with the outcomes.
Over time, we experimented and learned how to work best with our specialists. Our structure evolved and experience taught us that specialists and practice owners loved this flexible business model. So the demand grew.
Synergy became a great fit for specialists in all phases of their careers, not just for full-time specialists. We have been instrumental in enabling retired and part-time specialists to continue their careers, many of whom enjoy working at a less-demanding pace and finding some work-life balance.
In 2018, we added Dr. Alex Molayem to our core team, a dentist/entrepreneur with a visionary perspective who helped us realize what this company could be. Together we asked ourselves, if homeowners can monetize their services on Airbnb and drivers can monetize their services on Uber, can we create a platform for specialists to do the same? This journey has set us on a path to learn more and more about how we can use technology to create new efficiencies in dentistry, empower specialists, and make practices more profitable.
As we continue to grow and improve we’ve made huge investments in custom technology and assembling a team to achieve this. Our vision is to make the traveling specialty more efficient, convenient, insightful, and lucrative.
